Mara Tapp, Founder and Director, Cool Classics!
An award-winning journalist and broadcaster for more than 30 years, Mara Tapp’s work has appeared in Chicago magazine, the Chicago Reader, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Catalyst, Bookforum and Playbill, on many public radio and television broadcasts, as well as on public access television.
During the seven years she spent doing The Mara Tapp Show on WBEZ, Chicago’s National Public Radio affiliate, she had the privilege of interviewing children’s authors including Eric Carle, Tomie dePaola, E.L. Konigsburg, Madeleine L’Engle, Maurice Sendak and William Steig.
Fifteen years ago, Tapp added teaching to her professional activities and is proud to be a substitute teacher in several Chicago Public Schools, including the one where her daughters began their formal education. She also taught students how to think and write critically about a wide range of arts and culture in the graduate program for New Arts Journalism at the School of the Art Institute and at Columbia College Chicago. Tapp is honored to have been recruited by the late Irving B. Harris to serve as a mentor at the Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago, which she did for 25 years.
